Packing with Does - Dodgerdoob - 03-01-2014

Obviously wethers are the preferred packer , but do many people pack with does? I ask of course because I have 2 4 year old does. One is a former
Show goat in 4H so she has good training to lead and follows like a dog. She is a mid
size Nubian and has good confirmation. Would the main issue be saddle fit? I assume most other things like load limit and conditioning would be standard regardless of sex. Thanks

Nubians tend to be low on the vigorous or motivated side. Best I can suggest is, get her into hiking condition and give her a try. And needless to say a doe will never get to the size and scale of most wethers. But lots of people use em. We may very well turn Clyde into a packer. Thou she is on the very large size for a doe.

We will be packing with June this year, who we bought from Dave. She is bigger that 2 of my wethers twice her age, so saddle fit is not an issue. My largest wether is a Nubian/Boer and has done great on the trail. He is one of the few though from what I've read about as far as Nubians and Boers are concerned. He's huge and powerful, but comes with a bossy attitudeRolleyes

Where and how they grow up tends to be a big influence. My first two does where Nubians. But because they were raised with Alpines, they ever took on the normal characteristics that they are famous for.

Wow, neat to hear June is getting as big as expected Smile Clyde would be so proud of her baby girl!

I agree, Basil was raised with other breeds so I've always thought that played a part in him not taking on some of those unwanted Nubian traits.

Yeah, I can't wait to get her out on the trail. She has so much energy!

With those long legs she could nearly walk over anything Smile
