Well, I was Blackie's Handmaiden, then Blackie's Maiden on here a long time ago. I lost Robert, husband to heart attack 3 years ago. These wierd freezes we had recently, I lost Blackie and several others. Broke my heart. Told myself I was going to just let the goat part of this farm fade out by attrition, all getting old. Then I was hit by a moment of insanity and bought 4 alpine buckling babies today, 2 days old and 3 days old. Not nearly as magnificent as those I saw you guys packing but this is Texas where most of what is available are boars and Nubians.

But I'm rusty. Forgot a lot so I will be full of questions again. Hope to connect again with some of you I knew from the past. Thanks. Connie Losee

Hi all! I’m new here. I keep a few goats in southern CA. We do a lot of trips with our goats in our local backcountry around here. This fall we are embarking on a big journey to visit friends in CO and we want to do some backpacking along the way. We’re looking to stop in southern Utah on the way there, and maybe cut through northern NM and northern AZ on the way home. We have two months for the whole journey. Any recommendations on beautiful goat friendly areas to explore in those areas? I’ve heard Escalante in UT is beautiful and has enough water/feed for goats. Any tips appreciated!

Hi there!
Young person just getting into goat packing.
I’ve worked on many dairies and travel in the backcountry in the “off season”
I am getting ready for an extensive backcountry trip with pack goats in summer 2025.
I would love to find a small piece of land to rent for my 3-4 goats while I save money and train them for next summer. I have an off grid tent set up that I live in full time. Very comfortable with outdoor living and have been living outside for many years.
Am currently in Washington state and happy to rent land anywhere in western U.S. (Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon or Washington)
Hoping to find a place starting this fall or winter!
Thank you

Hello everyone!

Anyone from Alabama or Georgia here? We are in Roanoke, which is right on the Alabama/Georgia state border. We would love to meet other like minded people who are interested in Homesteading!

About our Farm:
We own a homestead in Roanoke, AL where we have Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Kune Kune Pigs, American Guinea hogs, Guinea hens, Red Star Chickens, Delaware Chickens and Quails.
All of our animals are fed Organic and raised as Naturally as possible.
Our goal is to be primarily an educational farm. We have been homesteading for 20+ years and we are dedicated to sharing natural farming, gardening, health and craft knowledge with our community.
We also sometimes offer farm tours, goat walks, and classes in gardening, nutrition, cooking and crafts.
Used to post on here years ago to get into a pack goat to be nomadic.
been a settled off grid homesteader with my wife and son for a few years now but am moving again to a more wild place with public lands to tramp in. will be using sheep for awhile, with a eventual change in species here and there.
is anyone making their own packs? i am making a multi use one right now from scrap lumber and y'd sumac branches. if i could post photos i would.
my rams lead well and in tandem through woods. hoping to sling some gear and disappear here and there off our dirt road.
it for now thanks!

Hi Everyone, we live in New Mexico and live right across the road from 45,000 acres of State Land, where we have a very busy elk, deer, bear, and mountain lion hunting seasons. Our goats get to free range and climb the mountainsides with us.
This past year we were very honored to take over the only Valais Blackneck goat breeding program in the US. We think the wethers would make excellent packgoats due to their back legs being larger then other Swiss breeds (alpine, togg, Saanen, ect) and their more muscular body structure (they were originally a dual purpose breed, instead of being just milk). They are incredibly strong goats (wrangling even 1 year olds can be hard) and very thrifty eaters. They grow slowly like the Alpine, but when we had alpine and Blackneck kids last year, the Blacknecks tended to be bigger.
We are currently kidding with 50% Alpine and 50% Blackneck kids. They are proving to be very tall and leggy with slightly shorter coat length.
Well, thanks for letting us join!

We will be visiting family in the Bitterroot Valley over Labor Day weekend and probably attending the Ravali county fair while we are in town.

Any pack goat breeders or owners care to meet up for a visit? Would love to meet more people in the packgoat community. Especially this area as we are hoping to eventually move to the area.

Hi All,
I'm new to goat packing and I am interested in setting up a string of goats. Goat packing in Australia is not overly common. I am looking at adopting very friendly goats that have been peoples pets to use at pack goats. Has anyone done this and so they have any advice? I'd like to do a very very long distance trip in April on the National Trail and have dreams of getting a string together for it. Are these realistic expectations?

How many goats would I need to carry 2 people's worth of hiking and camping gear to allow me to be sufficient for two weeks at a time. I pack light, but I get back pain if I carry loads for too long hence wanting to use goats.

Can you recommend what gear to buy? There are quite a few different brands and it's a bit overwhelming and the AUD to USD exchange rate is terrible at the moment so the gear is very expensive.

I'd appreciate your insight and would love to touch base with any other Aussies - especially if you're in Victoria.

Thanks
We live on a few acres and are a homeschooling family. My husband and I loved to go backpacking, but now have 3 young kids and I have been trying to figure out how to get us all in the backcountry.
Hello everyone! I have been raising Kinder goats in the mountains of NC since 2019. I raise my goats for milk and meat production, but this year I had a wether born that is so friendly that me and my family just can't part with him. I don't really like having an animal that serves no purpose, and of course the thing that comes to mind for a wether to do is be a pack goat. I have a lot of questions about if this would be possible for me and my little guy, should I post a new thread with all my questions or should I just do it on this one?
