Well, given her outrageous size, I was just sure Petunia had at least three big babies, but I'm thrilled to announce the birth of two smallish doelings. She doesn't look much smaller now than she did before she gave birth, so it looks like our wonderful mama is just (ahem) "healthy." Apparently she takes "eating for three" very seriously. But given that she's going to be nursing kids throughout the spring blizzards, it's probably best that she has plenty of reserves.
The birth was fairly uneventful. Petunia was doing a lot of rolling on her back when I came in so I figured she was trying to get them repositioned. I took a quick feel and there was a kid in the passage in the correct position so I gave it a little tug to see if I could help ease it along but it was stuck. I ended up pulling pretty hard before I decided to reach higher in, and there was the other kid's front feet right alongside the first one's head. There wasn't quite enough room for the head to clear the pelvic bones with sis's feet in the way, so I pushed those other feet back ever so slightly and baby #1 came whooshing out all at once with no trouble at all. A few minutes later, baby #2 leaped into the world with no assistance and too fast for me to even catch. I'm sure if I hadn't been there Petunia would have had them sorted out on her own within 10 minutes, but I enjoy assisting when I can. It keeps mama from being quite so tired afterwards. I'm sure I'll have lots of photos tomorrow! Baby #1 is a striking cou clair with splashy white markings on both sides and a face that looks almost exactly like Sputnik's. Baby #2 is a big and very active black doeling with tan sundgau markings and just a tiny bit of white on her forehead. Yay for baby goats!!
