Pacific Crest Trail

I finally went back and looked at some pictures I took of our last trip with Yukon. It's been almost 3 months since we euthanized him and I'm still crushed.

I'm glad you're getting out to hike again. Poor Yukon. You did everything you could possibly do for him, but some things just aren't meant to be. You'll always treasure his memory. When we lose a goat I find it's comforting to have all the others nuzzling for treats and still needing affection and daily care. They help us move past the sorrow and look forward to new beginnings and new adventures. I have no doubt whatsoever that when we die we will be reunited with the animals we loved. They are not lost to us forever.

You should submit your favorite photos to the NAPgA calendar photo contest. Deadline is tomorrow. I still have to submit mine!

Life has been crazy this past year and a half, fingers crossed things have started to settle some. Crazy how we can make plans but not results. We finally got the goats out and it's a great example of this. We planned a meandering river trail, and were so excited that we missed our turn and went up a ridge trail that climbs 3000ft. After a couple miles we realized something wasn't right and did not torture our out of shape goats or selves for that matter to continue, it really kicked out butts. We haven't been out much at all this year due to family matters, but boy was it nice to be out.

Since we took the wrong trail at first, and the right trail, Waptus river was a meandering 10 miles to camp we decided it was best to change our plans and try something else. Already exhuasted at this point we ended up staying in a horse camp for 2 nights, and day hiking to Pete lake.

To say some things about Huck. He's out of shape but loves being out there, and gives it his all. He did great at 2 years old with 3lbs in each pannier (total of 10lbs on his back.) He actually drank water this time but really prefers our filtered water.

Now to say some things about Kingsley. He's got a stubborn streak. He doesn't really seem to enjoy himself, he kinda just wants to go home and be a pasture potato. When ever we approach the tiniest hill he really throws a fit about it and lays down. When we go somewhere he's not comfortable going he goes running down the trail screaming. We've decided this was his first real trip and likely his last real trip for these reasons on top of some other concerns. He has some crooked front legs we were hoping would straighten some as he aged but they seem to be getting worst. He's not mineral deficient, its' just him, but he's already going to be big, adding weight and rugged terrain just isn't quite fair. I don't think he'll be complaining much.

We plan to take Huck out again on a trip with just him and see how it goes.

But for now Here are some pictures of our get away.

Great pictures, sounds like Huck definitely won't be too heartbroken about not becoming a regular pack goat- I think I have been bushwalking with a few people with the same attitude...namely my eldest son ;-)

Strange to have an unenthusiastic goat. I met one once that was a laggy goat, but he never would lay down. Sounds more like a health issue, like you say...a joint pain or something.
I don't drink beer, but if I did, I'd prefer Dos Equis.  Stay thirsty my friends!

Yes, Kingsley's behavior is definitely unusual for any goat--even the famously "lazy" Nubians. At least Huck was game for the trip.

Yea it sure was odd. Kingsley was back to his happy self the day after we return and he got a full nights rest.

You must have gone up the Polallie Ridge trail by accident haha.... always gotta watch that one.  Coincidentally I went up there with my goats on labor day weekend, overnighted up near Diamond Lake.  They were pretty tired the last 1000' gain, took our sweet time for sure but it worked.

Sorry to hear about your Kingsley, maybe it is his joints bothering him, poor guy.

P.S. Hope to post entries in the NAPgA calendar site soon, waiting as I am hoping to get a few more trips in before Sep 30 with some better pics!  Weather this weekend is pretty bad tho Sad
